Spitting into your mask to prevent it from steaming up does work.
Yet...., apparently, it doesnt actually prevent it misting up, but makes the mist (condensation) lay flat on the masks glass instead of forming little globules on the glass.... it is easier to see through flat condensation than globuled condensation!
Saliva has proteins in it... in solution the protein molecules are curled, with their Hydrophilic (water loving) sides on the outside ready to attract water (condensation).... when saliva is spread on a dirty mask glass, these protein molecules lay flat on the glass because the inner side of the curled molecule is attracted to the dirty oil on the surface of the glass.... this leaves the hydrophilic side of the molecule exposed but now flat on the glass surface..... when this does the attracting condensation bit - the condensation is now flat
As said in the begining, it is easier to see through flat than through globuled shaped condensation.

I use Johnsons' No-more-tears baby shampoo.....works everytime.
..... and its far more civilise than gobbing in yor mask on the poolside!!

clean the mask with soap and rinse thoroughly. then wipe with slice of apple, a slice of potatoe, or a tiny dob of toothpaste. all these work fine.
if you dont like someone, tell them onion works as well! |

But, is protein green? .....or should I floss more  |

No!
Years ago this was the best method. There used to be a film of microscopic proportions which could be removed by toothpaste. Then you could spit in the mask and wipe. Modern masks now have a special coating which prevents misting and the manufactures instructions state do not to tamper with the coating ... don't even touch it!! It then never mists up! As soon as you use toothpaste (which is mildly abrasive) or even spit and rubbing over time will remove this coating and you'll develop misting.
All that being said over time the coating comes off (as my mask is loose in my kit bag and gets knocked around) and you'll have to resort to spit and wipe (or forking out money for other products if you find you've a smelly breath ). _________________ ~~~~~~~ St. Albans Underwater Hockey ~~~~~~~

Good point about tooth paste being abrasive to todays coated lenses..... I believe my lens should have no coating now..... yet does sport a hint of minty freshness. |

it goes on to explain refraction and how bent light distorts clear visibility, which is why misted glass is harder to decern visual clarity through......
....and says that not knowing this is "disrespectful to physics"!

Whet i do is use an item such as a towel or cloth to wipe the surface of the glass, both inside and outside, this gets rid of grit or mud from the lens......
makes it clearer and then on the inside the mask should be dry before entry to the pool, then wet it and ware it.
Its ok you can you what happens.......... it much better you can see, some times you can apply spit before entry and rub it in. |
