It works for indoor sports halls, so why not evolve the swimming pool arena:....

When a sports hall is built, line markings are created on the floor for 5 a side football, badminton, basketball etc etc and people use the space for a known and agreed 'game'.
When a certain game is not being played, the lines do not hinder other uses.

.... So, why not mark out swimming pool floors with the underwater hockey areas. It will cater for the growing popularity and not hinder the pools other uses, including usual lane swimming.

All pools that are in development now should have this suggested, encouraged, reasoned... many will have it later, so why not be part of the 'in the groove' people with vision Cool Shocked Wink

[...ponder if your pool managers may be yerning for a tile catalogue for christmas. added nov 2nd 2005]

Ok as a great 1st 'reply' contribution to the topic (err, bear in mind we are still prepping the website for launch soon) we have found this:
Published Oct 2005 at the BOA website news.......

Octopush E-News Bulletin 51
Chairman's drive to modernise British Underwater Hockey pays early dividends
Dear Colleague
For several months now the BOA Chairman, Charlie Simms has been in discussion with BASC and ASA. Primarily he has been discussing the benefits of underwater hockey to these associations and for greater recognition for UWH, now that our sport has committed to change and modernisation.
As part of this work to date, the association was invited to give input at the initial planning meetings of a new 50m pool. For incorporation of UWH within the design of the new 50m pool planned for construction by Ealing Council, London. It has now been confirmed as a result of the chairman’s work, that Ealing Council have agreed to add into the design of their new pool, two full size UWH courts.
Quote:
This is as far as we are aware the first time in the UK that UWH has been taken into consideration and accepted when designing a new 50m competition pool.

The pool is still several years from final completion, however once completed we will have a 50m pool at our disposal with full size UWH courts marked out on it.
This has only been possible because of the vision Charlie Simms has injected into the BOA in the last 12 months. Hopefully the sport will see more benefits and recognition in the next few years to come from as a result of the changes that will make our sport more professional and presentable to the out side world.
Yours sincerely

'Nice one' Charlie Simms (and all those in on it .. and of course those on Ealing Council who evaluate, embrace and foster forsight, wisdom and other such exceedingly admirable qualities) 'Fine Form' indeed.

When the game is televised and general public know it better, I think pools will be expected to have the markings on the bottom, or they won't be 'cool n hip'.

Hope so. it is a great all round fitness and team game.

Like the multiple lines that can be seen on the floor of a well used (needed) sports hall - I think as well as the typical swimming lane lines, there should be underwater hockey markings as well.
I agree, future pools (suitable to have a game of underwater hockey) will be un-hip if they dont include them. Wink
